No! its not a piece of wool handed down to me by my nan, rather it is a literature review website i have set up with the snitz forum powering it. I have installed a couple of MODS, most noticeably to you will be the calendar. Its only been live a couple of days and i keep adding to it. Let me know what you think and also any suggestions to other MODS i mite wnt to add to add.

You might want to create a test account and post the username and password to allow folks to enter and take a gander...

tried to have a look around your forum but it is loading really slowly. perhaps a temporary glitch with your server.

i noticed your spelling of shakespeare was incorrect under the gossip heading.

Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0113'

Script timed out

/forum/forum.asp

The maximum amount of time for a script to execute was exceeded. You can change this limit by specifying a new value for the property Server.ScriptTimeout or by changing the value in the IIS administration tools.

lol, thanks for that spelling mistake! i should know better, the street i live on is called Shakspeare Avenue! also forms part of one of my email adresses. just a typo.

i noticed its loading slow to, thats usually after i update the forum with new topics etc. i will do as you suggest, tho i'm a complete novice at this stuff, i only picked up a web page for dummies book about 2 week or so ago, and i had no idea what asp or web hosts were(i thought you simply made a website on ur PC and saved it to ur HDD like other documents! hehe). i only done a bit of programmin before at uni (C++). Think i'm picking it up though. just one small question. what is IIS? would this be in the control panel of my web hosts account page? (where i set up SQL databases and new mailboxes etc.) Also, would upgrading to a MySQL database make it quicker? i done a bit of database stuff ages ago and im sure i heard that SQL is better because it is faster and can cope with larger volumes of people tring to access it.

thanks again for your comments

been lookin around my host website, cant seem to find ISS, but i did find a service record detailing the recent update of their database software, and that some customers may have experienced timeouts etc. i been on my site now thru another PC and it sees to be nice and quick. however it is 1:30 am!(GMT + 0hrs) going to bed now.

IIS stands for Internet Information Server. In other words, it's the software that actually serves up web sites and pages. If you are familiar with Apache on the 'Nix platform, it's the same thing (in the sense that it is a web server package). You won't find it in your host's control panel - it runs on the server and a lot of the functions have to be addressed on the server by the administrator. There is a "lite" version in Windows XP - go to Add/Remove programs, and then click for Windows Components, and you'll find it there for installation. The "full" version is found in Windows Server.

Yes, changing to MySQL can speed things up over Access - assuming that you have the hardware and bandwidth to do it, and that there is a need. If you have a small forum and few members that don't post much, then Access is more than sufficient, and will give fast enough results.

Not bad. I'd change the look of the forum links and nav though. Maybe left-align it so it looks a little closer to the rest of the forum.

Then again, I make that suggestion most all the time since the default design drives me nuts.

Do you need the moderator column? Seeing as you're the only moderator and there are dozens of forums, it seems a bit redundant.

Looking good, though!

I Have a few people lined up as moderators, but I'm waiting on replies at the moment, i have thought about it though. and i have only had it up there for about a week so far, and im still playing round with it.

I want to left align the forum nav but have no idea how, and dont want to be messin around with code without any instructions like you get in MODS. If anyone has a suggestion or a how to please get back to me.

Cheers!

There isn't much in the way of step-by-step directions for it. Mostly you just need to play a little with some of the code in inc_header.asp

All things being equal, I'd have a test site set up and use that to play with until you got it the way you wanted and then copy the changes over to the live site. Its what I did here: http://warsongrecords.waywardsondevelopers.com/forum_home.asp

I honestly couldn't tell you exactly what changes I made since I just kept plugging at it through trial and error. Plus there are a few other non-standard changes...

cool, wil see what i can do. tho the only programmin code i ever learnt was c++ and that was coz i had to, wasnt much good at it. some of asp looks like html, so i dont think i'll get too lost. i'll stick to the parts of the code that look familiar like <td> etc. i guess this is where i'll be looking?

thanks again
