Avtive users are simply those members that currently have an active session on you forums so, by that definition, inactive users would be those members that do not currently have an active session, i.e. are not logged in. To answer the first part of your question then; members become inactive when they log off your forums or their session expires.

Can you tell me how long a session is? I am looking at the active members list. It show the active members and then lists in-active members. Most of the time I notice on in-active members it shows posting or editing profile. I am just confused.

Hmmm... this hasn't been that clear, has it?

What do you mean active members list? The one for the active users mod? AFAIK, active users mod does not show inactive members...

On our forum http://www.grunt.com/forum at the bottom in shows the active users. When you click on "Active Users" it takes you to a screen that shows all the active members and what they are viewing. Below the active members it also shows the "In-Active Members". That section also shows where they are and what they are doing. In the admin mode it shows the IP addresses on both but does not show the username of the in-active members. Anything you can tell me will be of great help.

Those are just anonymous members. Someone (who I don't know), decided to call them inactive members, which makes no sense at all. They are anonymous members.

Are they actually members or are they just guests? Being in admin mod I can see the anonymous members in the active users section. I have one of my employees logged in as a regular user and they can not see the anonymous members.

Most of them should be guests, but the mod version I know allows a member to be seen as anonymous if the admin enables such feature. Anyway, the vast majority will be guests.

ruirib:
I have a related question. This what I see in my forum, which is aprivate forum i.e. only registered members can login. This is what I see in the active users:

Active Members: 4 | Guests: 2 || Total: 6 [ Administrators | Moderators ]
Active Users Record: 6 | Record Set On: 02/22/2007 at 22:20:58
Members Online: ABUSALIF | aelegeil | Mohamed Salih | áäÇ ãåÏí

My question is who are the guests? Needless to mention if someone logs in as anonymous, it shows them as anonymous. Is there a security issue with version 3.xx ?

Thanks

Guests are non-members or members who are not logged in.

Also, the fact that there are guests being shown by active users doesn't mean they actually got in the forum. Active Users determines who is online in inc_header.asp, before the code gets the chance to inform a user he has no permissions to browse the forum.
