When anyone tries to log in to the forum it either comes up with error 500 or if it does load and someone tries logging in it just goes straight back to the login page even though the details are correct.

You need to state the actual error message, so that we can know what to fix.

Either the site will not work and a message comes up saying error 500 (server error) which i think is something to do with the host. When that doesnt come up and someone tries logging in they can enter their details, click ok, it says login successful then after a few seconds goes straight back to the login screen even theough the username and password are corect.

Try this: http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=21987
It can allow you to get the actual error message.

Can you post a link to your forum and provide a test login?

You always run the risk of leaving some necessary field unfilled, but you can try.

Sounds like the symptoms I had with the http referrer problem.

Are you accessing the forum with a computer running XP sp2 or a Symantec firewall? If so, check out this mod.

http://www.snitzbitz.com/mods/details.asp?Version=All&mid=172

It fixed the problem for me.

The mod addresses a similar issue but with the registration, not the login. Login issues are usually caused by something else.

the specific message was:

Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0113'

Script timed out

/masseyferguson/online_forum/default.asp

The maximum amount of time for a script to execute was exceeded. You can change this limit by specifying a new value for the property Server.ScriptTimeout or by changing the value in the IIS administration tools

And it recovers from that error in a reasonable ammount of time? That is, if you immediately refresh the page, will it give you the login sucess message?
