hi
i want to shift my access db to sql server db, is there any utility which creates db on sql server or should i import access db into sql server.
i am new user and i have not entered any data into access db. this is the default db provided by forum which i want to export into sql server.
if i create db there may little chance of typing mistake or wrong datatype.
so how should i setup sql server database for forum
thanks in advance ashok kumar sharma |

you should use the forums setup.asp to creat your SQL database, once youhave done that you can then import the data from your access db, do not attempt to just export your access db to sql, the forum will not work if you do |

Why do you say it would not work?
I have just done that and it seems to work fine.
I upsized the .mdb database I was using to MS SQL with Access' built-in Upsizing Wizard. Then I just changed the connection string and it works just fine. I did not run Setup.
Should I re-do it doing the setup step and then importing the tables? Should I worry about something or can I call it a successful migration?
The forum with the access database is running at http://www.educar.org/comun/foros
And the one with the MS SQL is running fine at: http://www.educar.org/foros
(the only difference is that the SQL db is older, when I did the test migration)

If I remember right, a lot of the indexes and defaults don't get setup right when you do it that way. I would probably recommend that you re-do it using the steps outlined. They explain it that way for a reason.
But if you want, wait a few more minuets and if ruirib hasn't already posted by the time I'm done typing this he'll be by with a second opinion shortly. |

Is the setup program supposed to create the tables in my database or do I do that manually? All I see running is the insert script - where is create table tablename???

Got it - see above. I was going to use access but it was recommended here I should just stick w/sql... |

Ok, all is well when it ends well.
Interesting how well it works. I was never able to get rid of the "Missing Activation Key" error message when someone clicks the email link. All they needed to do is log on after getting the error and they would be moved to the active member table.
Instead of living with the error message I changed it to "Happy text". So now instead of "Missing Activation Key", it says "Registration Successful!". Sounds much nicer I think!
Thanks everyone for a great first forum experience. http://www.miniplayer.info/forum/

I can't understand that. There is no reason the missing activation key error, I have no memory of such a persisting situation with the thousands of users of our code.
Is this a brand new forum? |
