Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80004005'
Could not use ''; file already in use.
/forum/inc_header.asp, line 113
Line 113: my_Conn.Open strConnString
It is about time I know what this error means and how to prevent it. I think Access can only support one request at a time so it errors users who make requests at the same time.
If this is true, how can I prevent this without upgrading? Is there a setting I can use to fix this in the DB itself?
Thanks |

I've done a search but the people who asked the question don't seem to fully understand it. Just hitting refresh can and will clear this up.
Reading a few articles from Microsoft I added some extra permissions to the DB itself. I cannot modify the permissions on the virtual folder it is kept in. |

strConnString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & Server.MapPath()
So yes.
Should I move to this one? 'strConnString = "DRIVER={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)}; DBQ=""
Reason why I chose that is because it said Access 2000 vs 97. |

Well the changing permissions didn't help any. Still same error. I'll try some access options see if I see something.
Until then I'm stuck. I've been getting this error ever since I started using it. |

On the server. tester/tester
If you go here: www.twistingshadows.com/forum/ and hit refresh a few times (or as many as needed) you'll run into the error.
Some options I found in Access Options: Default Open Mode: Shared (Checked) Exclusive
Default Record Locking: No Locks (Checked) All Records Edited Records
Those two stand out the most in that situation. I believe those values perform best in that manner.

Those settings are specified on the Access aplication itself, don't think they are applicable to the .mdb file used in a website. Maybe you can specify similar values in the connection string. Will try to check that.

Roughly 12. It can happen with only two.
I can't make it happen when I test on my machine which makes me think it happens when users request information at the same time. |

When it happens, does somebody have the database open in Access (the MSO application)? |

You cannot open the DB from the FTP. You must download it. When someone is downloading the DB it shows the error updateable query.
The only person who can download is me and one other. Accessing the DB through the web has been blocked via server and name encryption. And besides, those are only during the weeee hours of the morning. |

Just checking. I remember reading about an issue with the fact that ASP can't access an Access Database that is currently open in Access... don't ask me why. |

Before I started the forum I asked one of the web developers where I worked. He meantioned something about exclusive access meaning only one connection. That is why I have it on shared.
Looks like I will have to upgrade. |

I can confirm that as I use Access locally, and want to kill someone everytime I need to check something in the DB and forget to close it. |
