I have a small problem where on sorting members by last here date some members are not recorded properly.
For example on investigating this I found for one member:-
M_LASTHEREDATE 20060425160427
M_LASTPOSTDATE 20060428080050
so he posted something on the 28th but it still shows his last here on the 25th!
I'd appreciate any thoughts.

A member can post without being logged in, that's why that happens. The last here date is the date when he last logged in to the forum.

Yes, but I have registration switched on and authorisation set to DB so why isn't the user noted as logged in?
Is something else required to force a user to login with username & password please?

You need to set Require Registration to On in Admin Options->Main Forum Config.
