I found This Topic in the archives and I'm hoping that is the explanation.

I have noticed an increase of users with the same ip address and one address is being used by 8 members

Can anyone confirm this as a normal thing?

Thanks

Ay, unless they're up to owt nefarious, there's no need to worry; there's a few different ways this can happen.

Ok cheers guy's

Another bugging issue is people trying to register and they don't know their own email address and have to register 4 or 5 times in the space of 20 minutes If I get the email bounce back I delete the pending membership straight away. Otherwise they get 7 days.

Ditto here - on both the multiple IP issue and the email typo on register.

I'm surprised the number of people that can login to hotmail.com to read their email, but when they have to write down the address the magical ".au" lands on the end

A mod that records a persons actual ip address and not the proxy would be most useful. I've had to banish a few people from my forum and stopping the registering again can be difficult without punishing an innocent person every now and then.

That would be great if that could be done!

I was on the receiving end of this before on another type of board(not snitz) but basically myself and another person were using Onspeed, so we 'appeared' to be the same person even though we were in 2 different countries

I'm starting up my own board soon, and it would be great to know who's who so as not to accuse someone in the wrong.

I'm just a simple programmer, and I'm still trying to learn about servers/routers/etc., but I'm not sure that its possible.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the server just record the IP of the computer requesting the page? And if that server is a Proxy, doesn't it just get the IP of the proxy?

If you were to look at my IP address, you would see either Earthlink's proxy (If that is what they are using) or the cable modem, right? You wouldn't be able to figure out the router IP or my PC's internal IP...

Is there a way to programmatically backtrack further?

And even if there was a way that doesn't stop them from using the EFF's anonamizer...

Some proxy's will put the original IP in the request as well, so it's actually possible sometimes to get both the Proxy IP and the Original Client IP. All depends on the proxy really, but without that original client IP in the request there's no way programtically obtain what's not there to get :(

Ok. That does clear it up some. I kinda figured it would be something like that.

As a side note, I think even if it was possible for your typical proxies it wouldn't matter. I read an article about how some groups were setting up anonamizer like what the EFF did. If I can find the article again I'll post it (don't hold your breath, I haven't found the toolbox I set down in my own house "right where I would remember it" a month ago =/)

I went to get a real problem person banned direct from his IP and they said there was a way to obtain the actual ip address and if i could get it that person would be banned from accessing the site.
How to get it? I don't know and they couldn't tell me either.

I had a problem with flamers when I started up one forum, but then I posted this http://ukfilm.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~106.asp (go to the Chelsea Girl's first post if you can't bothered to read it all) and it seems to have put people off. Most of it's guesswork, but flamers out there don't really know what you are capable of as an admin, so you can use that to your advantage. That photo is of where he works (or somewhere close by). Did the trick!

Should raise a smile here.
