I have been running the snitz forums at my website for some time now, for roughly 4 months and just recently the forums have become increasingly slow.

During the past month or so i have began tinkering more and more with the colours/icon setups and i was wondering if it was this tinkering that has slown the forums down. The reason could also possibly be that the web hosts have updated their servers and this is what may be the cause of the problem.

Basically it would be good if you guys could pop over to http://www.multiplayercentral.co.uk/forums and see if you can notice anything that could suggest if i have done anything wrong or if the root of the problem is in fact the web hosts.

Thanks

Well, the best way to determine if it's the graphics is to run them through an optimiser like http://www.gifwizard.com

And, as a basic test, ping your server.

I had a lok around your site, I have a cable modem connection, and didin't see anything wrong with the performance of your pages, your banner could maybe do with optimising, since it is half the time is to download the banner, but on average your pages loaded in 4-5 secs which is what I would expect.

thanks for the replies. I think I will optimise the banner a bit, out of interest how could I go about pinging the web server, what kind of values should I expect?

Once again thanks for your help

just open a command prompt window o your computer and type ping www.multiplayercentral.co.uk

these are the results I got from pinging your address

Reply from 195.97.223.130: bytes=32 time=80ms TTL=117
Reply from 195.97.223.130: bytes=32 time=240ms TTL=117
Reply from 195.97.223.130: bytes=32 time=70ms TTL=117
Reply from 195.97.223.130: bytes=32 time=220ms TTL=117

as you can see it is not very consistent, and I would consider this a slow repsonse.

For great ping results, I use the uotrace utility found here:

http://voodooextreme.com/flypenguin/uotrace.zip

This utility will perform a trace route from your machine to your web site (or any site for that matter) and then allow you to poll (ping indefinitely) each hop between you and the remote address. This will tell you if there are bottlenecks getting to your web site or a potential problem with the host.

this is what i get:

Reply from 195.97.223.130: bytes=32 time=771ms TTL=114
Reply from 195.97.223.130: bytes=32 time=591ms TTL=114
Reply from 195.97.223.130: bytes=32 time=631ms TTL=114
Reply from 195.97.223.130: bytes=32 time=431ms TTL=114

which is still really crap but slightly more consistent, still its nothing compared to your webhost.

I used the tool sumo metioned and got these results (removed first two hops):

A best ping of 180ms and worse of 491ms leaves rather a huge range but the avg of 201ms isn't that bad I think.
Ofcourse this is a Sunday morning, and congestion problems might not show if you test now.
I would suggest downloading the tool sumo mentioned and check at different times during the week (at night, during the daytime, weekend) etc. to see how the server performs.

These were the results for Huws site btw:
