My forum is very large with hundreds of posts per day. When I need to delete posts or topics, I always have to type in my password even though I'm logged in as the Administrator. This is a major pain and takes a lot of extra time.
Is there something wrong where is doesn't see I'm the admin or is this how it works? If so, is there a MOD so all I have to do is hit the delete icons?
Thanks, Brian |

Why not just archive the old topics? Its easier than just deleting everything and it will help keep some consistency in the "reoccurring issues". (i.e. it will give you somewhere to point when the same questions pop up over and over again.)
For the record though, it works that way for two reasons: 1) So you don't accidentally delete something 2) To check and make sure that those deleting have proper authority. (being web-based, if someone has the URL they could hand-type it in and delete stuff if you were allowed to delete topics without authorizing yourself) |

To archive a topic, the last posting in that topic has to at least a month old. I have forums with pages of topics that are within a month old. When topics run their course, it is nice to delete them. Otherwise people continue to post in them. Currently I lock them out but then I have to wait a month to archive it.
There should be a way by setting a cookie or something to know I'm the Administrator and be able to delete posts and topic with a single click of the mouse and still maintain security. Better yet, have a check box by each topic or post where I can check multible items to delete.
I am spending an hour a day or more maintaining by message board (even with the help of 2 moderators).
Thanks for everyones help. |

Probably it would be easier to allow archiving for topics less than a month old. That would maintain the current security purpose of having to insert the password to delete a topic. |

Only an hour
Seriously, I think you're taking the whole thing wasy past extreme if you are locking, deleting and wanting to archive threads that have had activity within the last month. Don't your users feel restricted at all ? I know my forum content must be different, but threads started in December are still going strong and on-topic (off-topic stuff doesn't wash with me). Also, if you are interested in rankings, it would be better to leave the pages there - MUCH better for search engines, etc.. and for normal people just to read what's been going on.
The only valid reason I can see for deleting posts would be to reduce database size and you'll need to delete a LOT to keep that under control. If that's the case I'd suggest a better server/hosting plan. |

I'd still have to say that locking and archiving is better than deleting for keeping content under control. It gives a sense of history, allows for frequent questions to be answered fairly quickly, and keeps the forum counts up . I wouldn't under-rate the "popular" and "active" feel of a forum that has lots of posts....
All things being equal, I still wouldn't mess with a security feature like that.
But when all is said and done, its your decision to make. |
