.
My forum has several AOL users that have turned on subscriptions.
When Snitz sends them an e-mail notification of a new post, the e-mail message is refused.

Can I, and if so, how do I instruct the user to adjust their AOL settings to accept the forum subcription e-mail?

You cannot. You should apply for whitelist status. Its AOL's mail server blocking your email.

This is a common problem with AOL, you could try the whitelist but it might happen again at a later date.

It is guaranteed to happen. Then later it they will ban your ISP. Then later they will ban your host. Whitelists don't matter on AOL.

you probably need to add an SPF record to your domains dns in order to validate your mail server

Yes. You need an SPF record before you can apply for whitelist status. I'm sure that everyone's experience is different but it solved my problems with AOL.
