I configured my message board at http://www.hiltonlake.org/fourm/ for email this morning. It uses JMail 4.x When new users register, it sends them a welcome email just fine. If someone clicks "Send Topic to a Friend", that works great too. But when I choose "Subscribe to this board", it dosn't seem to work. Does it only email a summary at midnight or something?

I noticed that I had to go into each category and each board and turn on "Category Subscriptions Allowed" and "Forum Subscriptions Allowed" for all 11 of them. So I just did that and it still didn't seem to be working.
But then I logged off and registered a second user pointed to a second email account of mine and did some testing and everything is working great now. I found that when you subscribe to a whole board, it removes the buttons to subscribe to individual categories, forms, and threads. it also does not email you copies of your own posts. but testing with a second user worked great.
