I've searched the forum and can't find an answer to what seems a very basic question.
Can regular forum members change their own username?
It seems like they should be able to. As the forum administrator, I can easily change members' usernames, but I have members asking to be able to edit their.

No, the base code doesn't allow for it. |

Is there a mod that could accomplish this?

An Admin can edit a user to change their name. |

Note - I may take a few days to recieve your email. Hotmail filters all new emails as junk. Would be best to post all questions, concerns in a forum topic to catch my immediate attention. This way others can assist and also correct any similar mistakes.

You would not want a user to change their own names or you would wind up with a huge mess and no one would know anyone on the site anymore. Better for the admin to take a request from a user and then the admin change the name in my opinion..
To change a users name is quite simple for an admin. Just go and edit the users profile and you will see it there.

I agree, it's a bad move but you can do it by changing the profile editting page. At the moment that ability would be for mlev=4, just remove that limit and it should work BUT highly recommended NOT to do it. |

what happens is this, user A posts a fair bit, then wants to change his name to B. User C, meanwhile, thinks 'Oh good, now I can be A', and changes his name. He starts saying things that B(nee A) doesn't agree with, but people think he's posted them, wants to change his name back, but can't as A(nee C) is now using it, so appeals to the admin - 3 people messed around, in essence.
I would just leave it as-is if I were you, at least this way it is 1 admin messed around, and 1 happy user if you agree to make the change... |

thanks for the tips folks. I understand a bit more now the reasons for not letting members change their usernames at will.

Yeah, it's great to hear you have such an investigative spirit and nature - keep that spirit and question everything man, it'll stand you well in the future :) |
