I have the latest version of the snitz forums.

I need a clear description on how subscriptions work. I've checked the forums, and everyone has a slightly different problem. Answers are typically like this ... "Do you have your category set to accept category subscriptions?" etc. What I would like is a simple, concise explanation of how subscriptions work because it is not clear (and also because I'm a dumbutt). For instance, I subscribed to all categories in my forum but didn't receive any notices at all even though people were posting in my forum. So, I've been tweaking the different settings. In the process I've never seen a button for subscribing to a forum. And what does "allow topic subscriptions" actually mean? Does it mean that if I set the level in admin to "whole board" and then I set the level in the category to "allow topic" that people can subscribe to topics within that category? Or if I set the category level to "allow forum subscriptions" does it mean that people can subscribe to every post in every forum within that category? Does it matter what I have the admin settings set to for my users? The only way I've gotten subscriptions to work is by setting "topic level" in admin and "topic level" in forums. Then people can subscribe to the topics. But I want to be able to subscribe to categories, and also have users be able to subscrive to topics. Anything else I've tried hasn't really worked. It really is NOT intuitive. I've messed with the settings quite a bit and it's just a big frustrating mess. So, if someone could post a nice, clear, step-by-step tutorial on how subscriptions work and what each of the settings actually means, I think it would be useful to all who are new to the forums (especially to dumbutts like myself).

For instance, right now on the forum I have everything set to "subscribe by topic" yet no subscription link appears above the topics.

Thank you.

Eric

You should set the subscription level to the highest possible level in Admin Options (Whole Board), each category (Category Subscriptions) and each forum (Forum Subscriptions). Like that users will have the option of subscribing at the highest level, but also at topic level.

Email mode must be On, for you to see the subscriptions link.

Just found an old explanation by myself to turn on subscriptions....

1. Enable the Email function in the Mail Server configuration of the "Admin Options". Also, you have to choose the mail component and specify the address of your mail server.

2. Go to the "Feature Configuration" in the "Admin Options" and select there the subscription level for the forum subscriptions.

3. You must turn on the subscriptions for every single category and forum you want to use them with. This is done with editing the category/forum (click on the pencil sign on the right side of the the categories/forums at your default.asp). There you must allow the subscriptions and set them to forum level.

4. Then, you can subscribe to the forums by clicking on the envelope button

5. To view, what subscriptions you have, click on "My Subscriptions" in the top menu.

I hope, that helps.

Hi, I have 3.4.04, but :

I've enabled email and enabled forum subscriptions in admin & feature settings.

I've enabled forum subscriptions in the respective categories, but:

1) when you edit the forum (pencil) there is no subscription setting
2) no "envelope" appears at category or forum level?

what am I missing ?
thanks
