OK now the following may seem silly to you but before l even start the Reefer (nortons/nis fix) l need to know l am on the right track.
I took one look at the sticky and paniced. I run/admin a phpBB site and now a snitz site but have never done a back up or MODS etc
Now if l go onto the host site with Cute my FTP uploader and do a copy of the forum files. I have never done this before just put my website files there and delete the old ones when l add new site info.
I then paste them into a file l set up on my C/ drive that l can experiment in and not risk messing up the forum.
I then download the Reefer MOD onto my cmputer and open up the sticky help and the MOD help and am able to do everything to a point to practice without messing everything up.
When l come to actually do the MOD l have to work out what this means (path)\0-Forum_v34_04\ ForumAfterInstall. before l even get started.
l realise these may seem stupid and in a way answered but for me is very scary ground. |

Pick a simple mod, make a backup of your forum, do the changes and upload it with your cuteFTP.
Go slow and easy and you'll see it's not so hard. |

Soon as l get the passwords etc l will start praying. Thought l would get it today hence posting when l did ready to get going but looks may be a few days now.
Soon as l get the passwords l will be back here for help l can feel that in my bones.
l do want to learn it so l can do things but at same time if l screw up ... l dont even want to go there!!.

Screwing up is part of it. But the best part is how easy it is to fix when you do. Just make backups of any files you edit. If something goes wrong, just upload the backups and you're back in business. |

Always keep a copy of the data base, if when adding DBS_ file to upgrade the database it's possible for something to happen on the bad side . so with that copy u can at least reupload it and cary on.
One time i lost about 3 weeks of posting's on my site because i for got to do this!
What i also do is creat a testing site, like :- www.mysite.com/testing I do my testing there and if all goes well i then just move the files around and hope for the best.

I now have my FTP details to make a start can anyone tell me how l do a backup please?
Do l just copy the forum files from the server onto my computer?
Or can l at least do that to be able to have a look inside them so l can see what l have to do without messing about in the main server based section? |

Yes, just store a copy in a backup folder. You will need another folder where you will keep the files (to be) changed by the mod.

If you're running XP Pro, or Win2k Pro, you can even create a local copy of your forum, and test everything there. You just need to install IIS. |

Must be XP Pro. You need to install it from the Windows XP Pro CD. Just go to your Control Panel, choose Add / Remove Programs, Add Remove Windows Components, and check Internet Information Services, and then proceed with the install. |

The main reasons why this was not posted at Snitz and why I might not post the bugs I find directly at Snitz anymore are the ways "ruirib and HuwR" take pleasure to criticize just about anything I post and seem to resent the fact that I want to improve and correct Snitz which, I agree, serve as the original base for my own Forum.
These are some of the actions I find unacceptable: ruirib and HuwR take fun to Delete some of my topics, of my replies, locked or move my topic.
A topic posted last week from me to Davio in "Help: MOD Implementation" Forum as been deleted.
Two replies in my topic as been deleted about a bug on snitz topic page: http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?whichpage=5.96&TOPIC_ID=44136#372029
A Fix to texanman as been deleted (first reply to texanman subject): http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=66162
One of my Multi-Language Topic on Snitz has disappeared last night Multi-Language and Multi-Language Skin3D http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=40765
etc...
3 times I changed my password and the day after the same game start.
Since I send to HuwR a donation of $200 on December 22, 2006 this guy HuwR has never stop to pick on every thing I post on the Snitz Forum. |
