I've read several posts and items about upgrading the software.
I am using Max Webportal combined with Snitz.

I'm worried that after the upgrade the website will have a huge number of problems.

-Are there any common things that have to be done after the upgrade?
-Will this upgrade have any effect on the existing users?
-Will my language of the forumsoftware be overwritten? It is in dutch now...

Thanks!

If you're using MaxWebPortal, please ask there about upgrading. They know that better than we do.

The biggest problem you're going to face will arise from the fact that there is no up to date version of MaxWebPortal, the current version is based on Snitz v3.3.x, to upgrade, you're going to have to go with a base install and mod it up to suit your needs. There are a couple of portals available based on v3.4.x, which you can find in the Mod W/Code forum but chances are the transition from one portal to another will create more problems than building up the base code (can't say that with 100% certainty as I've never used any of them). To answer your questions:

The only thing that usually has to be done after an upgrade is the reapplication of any mods you had installed which, in your case, is going to be a pretty extensive process.

No, your data in your database is not touched at all during the upgrade process howver, when reapplying mods, the majority of them will drop any existing, related tables and recreate them to avoid any potential problems meaning you will lose any data contained in those tables.

Snitz Forums 2000 is currently only available in English so you will have to translate it to Dutch yourself. Alternatively, someone may have already done this and be willing to share.

I know all that makes it seem like there are no major advantages to uprgrading to v3.4 but the simple fact that there were a good few bugs and glitches in v3.3, including some security risks, which have since been fixed should be your main concern. It's going to take a lot of work to get your forum running the way you're used to but it will be worth it for the peace of mind you'll have knowing you're running a more secure package.

Oh, one final tip, always, always make backups as you work, just in case you mess something up.

The only way why i want to upgrade is to get a "normal" search for my website.
The performance now is really sad, sometimes more then 40 seconds.

Is there another way to get this problem solved? I've read the new way of searching for SQL. But if i understood you guys good, then this will only work for the latest version.

I'm planning to make a test environment with a whole new version of Snitz attached to my SQL server. And as soon as that server runs ok, i'm planning to put it online. But before i will be ready, I’m looking for a good temporarily solution.

I'm curious what you will answer!

Thanks

The mod you were attempting to implement earlier will only work with v3.4.x but I'm sure the v3.3.x code can be optimised to achieve similar results. Unfamiliar as I am with SQL Server, though, I'm afraid I can't be of much help to you there.

Remember, if you encounter any problems during the upgrade process that you can't fix yourself, your friendly, neighbourhood Snitzers are always here to lend a hand
