Just spotted this on the members list. When did that happen? What did I miss? Hopefully its just temporary but, if not, I want to say thanks to Huw for all his work and help with Snitz (both the product and the community) over the years and hope you continue contributing in some way in the future.

He demoted himself after posting at that thread. I would guess it's because of it.

Hopefully it wasn't because of that discussion, it would be a shame to lose a second, important member of the dev team over a difference of opinion.

It was because of the discussion, there's no doubt about it. I don't want to go into details, HuwR will tell ya what he thinks, if he sees fit.

Well, as Rui said, that's up to Huw himself. It's a real shame that what was intended to be a discussion to help Snitz move forward resuled in this

It's all so wrong

What's happenning guys - yes, I see a bit of a dwindle but don't lets rip ourselves apart and cut off our noses to spite our faces!

With the improved performance of modern servers, and the relatively low stress of a forum application, I see no problem in multi-db support. In fact, with a bit of consideration, it could become the greatest strength of a refreshed build - add a data abstraction layer and then standardise the code on top - then just different data adapters for each db can be implemented by people with appropriate skills keeping a consistent API.

Internationalisation via CSS alone makes sense - offload the stress to the client, admittedly leaving some far-downstream browsers behind (or we can work around it with a bit of intelligent thought), but browsing a forum on a mobile phone isn't funny anyway ;-)

We have a unique, highly intelligent and well-motivated community here, we've seen people coming and going, being born, married and dying through these forums, yet I doubt many of us have ever even met. Let's use some of our finer tact and intelligence and look at getting back on-track again!

If Huw has gone for good, that's a real shame - I do hope he hasn't, but farewell and many many thanks, Huw, if you have - as Vinnie Jones said in Lock Stock, 'It's been emotional'

In any organisation, people come and go. I remember when Gor was around. He was the main reason I got into developing with Snitz and he is the one that made me a Dev Team Member. He was great with the bug fixes and the code.

But he had to move on after years of contributing to the forum.

If this project was giving me undue stress and affecting me personally, I would leave also. This project is supposed to be done out of love of doing and for fun. If that is gone, it's no reason to stay anymore. Others will come in and take thier place.

Huwr has contrinbuted a WHOLE LOT to the project and we applaud him for it. He will hang around I'm sure, but if he feels he needs to move on for whatever reason, we'll surely miss him.

Thanks Huwr.

I'd like to add my voice those who have already expressed their appreciation to HuwR for his contribution to Snitz over the years. I sincerely hope its not the end.

Its unfortunate that every recent thread concerning the next version ends up in a heated debate. I don't think there is any malice intended and it shouldn't be taken personally by anyone. As Pdrg said most of us have never met and its very easy to post something on a forum which you would never say to someone's face. If there is going to be a further discussion I think it should be heavily moderated or just left to the admins to decide. Whatever happens, I'll still come here.

Thanks HuwR once again.

Podge.

Just noticed from the members list that Huw has been a member here for five years tomorrow.

Think Huw's been around since the before the server crash that wiped the old database clean, although I could be wrong. If I am, a preemptive happy anniversary.

I think all those members were given 01 July 2000 as their date of joining. If so it will be HuwR's anniversary tomorrow.

Yeah, we have been around from 98/99. Back then we were looking for a new host to host the forum. Server kept crashing on us. Huwr stepped in and offered to put the forum on his server for free along with a MS SQL database. Lots of money for that kind of setup.

This makes me sad. Huw was a great help over and over again. I've just tried to log into his site at magicmashroom and that seems to be down too. Come on guys this is crazy let things be as they were.
