My web host provided me with a Snitz forum added to my web site (by my request). However, they won't add any MODs for me, because they don't feel competent to do so - since they don't have the savvy for that, they might screw up the whole works.
Even though I'm a computer dummy, I'm a little more adventurous than they are. I don't want to add anything too complicated - just a MOD to prevent members from editing their posts, and another one to "override" the Norton Anti-Virus problem that can prevent some people from registering.
Question: There's an Admin. Option called "MOD Setup". Can I use that to install MODs myself? If I do that, can I screw up the whole forum?
Thanks- Nina http://forum.daoisopen.com/ |

The Mod Setup option is to run ASP files that modify the database. Some mods require database edits, and some don't.
However, regardless whether there is a database change, just about all mods requite that you edit one or more of the current ASP files. You can do this in Notepade or a text editor of your choice.
Yes, you can mess up your forum doing this, but you will learn ASP by trying. Simply back up your entire forum - download the files and the database to your system. Pick a mod and follow the instructions that come with it. If you mess up, upload the "good" files and database, and you are back to where you began.
Start with the Referrer Mod - I haven't looked at it in a while, but my recollection is that there is only one or two files to modify, and no database modifications. That makes it a good one to get your feet wet with. |

MOD Setup will put the necessary fields in the database tables for the MOD. The MOD will also have instructions on what files you need to modify code in. I recommend getting an editor with line numbers to edit the ASP files. A very good/free one is Araneae. If you need any help, just ask here. People here are very good at answering questions. |

Okey Dokey.
Thanks Soar and Rpainter for taking the time to respond to my question.
You've really helped me a lot - I realize that I don't have a clue what either of you said!
Best to leave the techie work to the techies, and be happy that I have such a wonderful forum provided by the kind people at Snitz............Just the way it is.
