... what would it be and why?
I've never worked with PHP, nor MySQL. I have the blessings of my boss to setup whatever PHP forum I choose. Since I haven't "played" with any. I would like your opinions.
Thanks. |

Simple Machines looks good. Couple that with Mambo and you probably have a "best of breed" for both.
I'm interested to see what other people think as well though. |

I don't like vBulletin from a user perspective and I despise phpBB from the admin side. If I had to choose (and I have) I'd go with phpBB any day. |

phpBB gets a big no vote from me, no matter what they say it's just too prone to hacking attackings (another vulnerablity last week iirc was "patched").
Invision is my preference for php based boards. |

I'd say Invision as well. It's stable, secure, super fast and feature rich. Not to mention it looks pretty. |

Yeah, invision is very nice yes, but if I had to pay, I would choose Vbulletin, I find it easier to use, both for admins and users. |

I find theres too many options in vBulletin, many of my customers just get confused, I've done quite a large number of conversions from one forum to another for folks and most seem to settle on Invision and those who want a bit more of a challenge go for vBulletin. |

Of the php forums, for a paid forum I would choose vBulletin. It's a mature product from a mature company.
Of the free ones, I like punBB. It's small, fast and uncluttered. |

Yeah, punBB is nice, outputs valid XHTML code as the only one besides Vbulletin, as I know of. |

As far as PHP boards go, I really like vBulletin as a user. When I'm doing a google search and land on a vBulletin I know I'll be able to navigate it quickly and easily.
On the other hand I don't like the vBulletin admin interface. As an administrator I think I would rather admin an Invision Board. |

I administrate both an Invision and Vbulletin board (besides 3 Snitz boards), and I find Vbulletin much easier as as admin, the featurelist is just right, not too much not too little. With Invision it´s too much and not easy, of course it helps after a while. |

Thanks for your input. Once I get PHP and MySQL running on the server, I might have to just bite the bullet and install a few and test drive them. Thanks for mentioning a few that I have never seen before. I'll check those out as well. |

kwhipp, vBulletin let's you play with the admin options on their site only, no test download, http://www.vbulletin.com/admindemo.php.
Also, they are planning a major upgrade this summer. It looks pretty cool - http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=138544.
I use vBulletin and love them. Their support is absolutely amazing. I messed up my database and their customer support manager logged onto to my site and looked around and found the problem for me. This was in less than 15 minutes after I contacted them!
I bought the license for 160, then you need to pay 30 a year for support / downloads. |
