We really need this feature. All other aspects of email seem to work fine. Everyone recieved there registration email, you can send through the Members module and even email from within the topic. The subscription doesn't appear to do anything. There is no error either on the server running IIS or the Exchange 2003 server. The forum is running on a W2K server and we use Exch 2003 Ent on Win2003 server for e-mail. The forum is running locally on the intranet and has no external access whatsoever. Help on this issue would be greatly appreciated! |

I didn't know that you also had to allow subscriptions to the forum as well. I already had everything else configured. Allow subcriptions in Admin area and Allow subcrptions to categories. It is working now thanks for the help. |

I must say that getting subscriptions turned on is a royal pain... After reading all the FAQs and this message board, I still spent about 90 minutes yesterday trying to get subscriptions turned on.
I've been really pleased with the Snitz forum... Looks nice, works well, easy to install, mostly easy to configure... But the procedure for enabling subscriptions seems extremely convoluted and complex, and the documentation less than explicit.
...Just a suggestion for an area to look at in future updates...
Otherwise, Snitz rocks!

Its not that complex but in order to provide the functionality and flexibility that it does it has to be the way it is.
You turn subscriptions on in the admin area. Then goto the main page of the forum. Edit a category and enable what type of subscriptions you want to allow (if any) for each sub forum within that category. Then edit a forum within the parent category and enable what type of subscriptions you want to allow (if any). The maximum type will be what you have previously selected for the parent category.
How would you improve it or make it easier? |

I understand the need for flexibility, don't get me wrong... But I'd be willing to bet that most folks who want to offer subscriptions would want to offer them for the entire forum.
When I first set up my forum, I had assumed the subscription feature would be ON by default (assuming, of course, that email is enabled)... I gotta believe subscriptions are a popular feature... So maybe there needs to be a check box to set all subscriptions ON, then the admin could go back and turn off any subscriptions he/she doesn't want...
Of course, maybe that's no less confusing, I dunno. Maybe there could be a mod that acts like a wizard to automate the process more... I can see where a large board would be very time consuming to go through and turn on subs all the way down to the individual thread level. |

I too was very confused the first time I set up subscriptions. Seems like all the steps mentioned above could be done from one admin page. Category listed on left with selectable subscription types, then nested forum names with the selectable subscription types for those. I wouldn't remove the existing functionality but it seems to me that having a page like this would make it a lot easier to understand everything that needs to be done to handle subscriptions. |

I understand your point. A page a bit like the category & forum order page.
Traditionally at Snitz, most forum or category editing of any kind has been done by editing the forum or category on the main page and the more general forum admin stuff is in the admin area. It makes sense that this always be the way so that forum admins know to look at the main page for specific forum or category settings and to look in the admin area for the forum wide settings.
One thing that could be done quite easily is to expand the help button in the admin area so that the instructions are clearer. Currently is says this.
quote: Allows you to set the Highest Level of Subscription that can be used on the Forum. You will also need to set the individual level in each of your Categories and Forums.

Yeh, that was frustratingly vague... Basically that helped me realize it could be done, but that was about it.
I like dvwebman's suggestion... That would have made things a lot simpler and more obvious. Most all other configs are very obvious and intuitive... You guys have done a great job, but this one was a stumper.
Now that I know how to do it, it does seem really really simple... But figuring it out did take a while... |
