I only have a cell phone, but now that one of my kids is getting older I might want to let him stay alone for short periods when I go out. I only have one cell phone and no phone in the house. Has anyone tried the internet based phones?

I was looking at http://www.sunrocket.com/ and it seems pretty good.

I have been thinking about getting a IP Phone also (even though I have a land line and cell phone) so that way I can tranfer the calls to whatever number I am at, have a 800 number, have a greeting when you first call in and everything else. I just havnt found anything that seems like what I need. I looked at sunrocket.com and it does seem pretty good but it says its not available in my area which is odd. If its thru the internet it shouldnt matter where I need it, but maybe they just are unable to get me a local number.

I suspect this is the problem. I looked at some of the free ones, like Skype, but you need to do it through your PC, this only uses the broadband connection, sounds better.

Vonage is advertising pretty heavily in our area. They seem pretty reasonable...

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

I use Vonage for both my personal and home office telephones and I love it. Half the price and more features included in the price. The service is clear.

Yeah, just hope you never have to use 911.

Just be glad you're not in Ireland where our main incumbent telephone company Eircom started charging for 911 calls.

quote:
EMERGENCY services in County Louth are facing mounting phone bills after Eircom started charging for the provision of the 999 call lines. This service has traditionally been provided free of charge, however in November, the Drogheda Independent revealed that Eircom had suddenly started issuing bills for the station’s two emergency phone lines and had warned they would cut the lines if the bills were not paid.

A lot of good voip companies allow you to dial 911 and they automatically reconnect you to your local emergency dispatcher. Kind of nice. I guess that is why they call it a "transparent" phone service.

Just curious, what is your adversion to getting a regular land line? Why worry about reliability?
I don't know about where you live, but around here a land line based phone with no frills is about $18 a month including taxes.

For my family it is not an aversion, just dollars and sense. For a flat rate of $27 per month I can call all of my family across the country, talk forever and it includes all the features that I would have to pay extra for to one of the "baby Bells". My wife's family is oversees and we use to pay around $0.50 per minute. Now it is $0.06 per minute and she is about 20 times happier, since she talks 20 times as long for the same price.

I will second that, since encouraging all the members of our familly (brothers, sisters and mom and dad)to get Skype I have saved £40+ a month in telephone calls

Just saw a friend tonight who recently got sunrocket. She's very pleased with the service and connection quality. I'm intrigued enough to look into it even though I do not make many long distance phone calls.

I just hooked up Vonage today. Let me know if you want to hook up, I think I can give you a month free if you get referred from me (I think I get 2 months free then). I can't comment too much on it yet, but the support was exceptional.
