(Subject was: Google and domain masking)

Anyone know how the search engine rankings work with domain forwarding/masking?

I've got my snitz forum which has good search engine rankings. I've created a personal site at the same domain so the spiders have indexed my personal pages. What happens if I buy a domain name and try using domain masking/forwarding to the personal part of my site? Will my personal pages still show up in the google search?

From what I have read, domain forwarding (and/or masking) potentially creates more trouble than good with the search engines. Therefore if I want my personal site to have its own URL, I should set up a new domain account for it.

BTW, my snitz forum is a music, special interest site. My personal site is to market myself to play this type of music in my area. So it is related.

So basically, I can either set up a new site with its own domain name -or- have my personal site piggy back off my snitz forum site. Frankly, I am apt to do the latter since I think it's better to have good google placement so people can find my personal site. However, my buddy thinks it looks more professional to have a unique domain for my personal site. Any objective opinions??? If I did create a new site, I think it would be highly unlikely that many would link to it.

I'm sorry, but I haven't found the real truth behind masking/forwarding.
I still don't understand how the Google rankings work....

A seperate domain comes for let's say 8 bucks a year, and it certainly looks more professional than a http://www.mysite.com/personalsite/.
What you also could do is use a subdomain like http://personalsite.mysite.com if your provider allows you to do that, but that deminishes the Google Pagerank advantage of www.mysite.com.

I agree that the seperate domain looks more professional. The cost is not really the issue, $8 for the name, or $50/year to set up with a shared host.

It's more the issue of search engine rankings. I really have no idea how they work.

Even though few seem to really care (and nobody really should other than me - it's my personal site), just an FYI, I used godaddy.com to register a domain and setup their free domain forwarding/masking. I do not know what I expected but was a little suprised to find that it's nothing more than using a frame to display http://www.mysite.com/personalsite/

Anyhow, it will work and I am not complaining for $8/year. If I'm inlined later on, I'll set up a shared hosting account for it but it will do for now.
