When browsing a site at very random times you will get "The RPC server is unavailable" message displayed on the client browser. I finally was able to reproduce this error message and on the page it occurred on is a place ASP page with no database interaction or not loading any components. It just includes the header and footer of site layout.

I have looked all around and appears that it is a DNS problem but just not seems correct. Has anyone else had this issue or know of a resolution?

I also have just noticed that it appears to be followed by the following error inserted in the Event Log on the server

Event Type:	Warning
Event Source:	W3SVC
Event Category:	None
Event ID:	37
Date: 3/1/2005
Time: 10:38:53 PM
User: N/A
Computer:	EZNETIDEAS04
Description:
Out of process application '/LM/W3SVC/17/Root' terminated unexpectedly.

sounds like either a dodgy site, or the server may be getting overloaded, I have noticed that the RPC service craps out quite regularly if the server is being stressed by IIS

is '/LM/W3SVC/17/Root' terminated unexpectedly allways the same one that craps out ?

No it is always showing a different path/website and can not find a rhyme or reason for it. I don't think it has anything to do with the server being overloaded. There are 75 IIS entry's for website's on this one server but I would say 8-10 sites are the only ones that actually get any kind of traffic. I have been running the Performance Monitor on the % Processor Time and it normally runs around 5%. I saw it spike once to 50% for just a quick second and other then that the spikes only take it up to 15%.

then you most likely have a site with some code your server doesn't like, and you are going to have a total nightmare tracking it down I know I've been there. One thing to check is any sites running access databases, if they are busy sites, upgrade them to sql if you can, that may help.

You could also try installing the IISRecycle tool and set it to restart IIS at regular intervals.

I just add iisreset.exe to the task scheduler.

ADOMonitor (free trial) may give you a clue where to start looking for resource hogging access queries.

Well appears that it was one of the sites on the server using Access. It was a busy snitz forum and I upgraded it to SQL last night and have not noticed the errors in the Event Viewer that seem to always follow everytime I recieved the RPC error.

Thanks guys.
