Sorry if the answer is blatantly obvious but I am a newby and I did a search first...so here goes

How do you activate the function that shows "lost your password" at log on, and allows the user to obtain a new one if they've lots\forgotten it??

You need to have email configured and working. Once you do that, the function will show up in the usual place.

....talking theory here now

Currently we use Cdont.... does that still send out a confirmation email on registration??? I can't remember... or\and is this then what turns the email function off??

If I get you right, we have to configure the "first box" (now cdont) and the third to show a specific email address i.e. forums@ourname.com???

You need to provide all the info: choose email component, specify admin email address and email server adress as well.
