I'm thinking of implementing the rel="nofollow" feature on my forums, but I'm not quite sure where to start.
My idea is to change the normal handling of and [ url="" ]txt[ /url ] to use the nofollow thing, and add a new tag for urls that don't need the nofollow tag. For instance [grl][/grl] (good url ) |

it would be far better to redirect the url's via an asp page.
eg redirect.asp?url=moc.tfosorcim.www//:http (eg. microsoft.com un reverse) some engines will just ignore the nofollow but the above will be effective if you put an exclusion to redirect.asp in your robots.txt file.
The good thing about this method, is that the engines cant follow the link if the link can only be reached from the redirect.asp page (and they are banned from that page via robots.txt)
The other good thing is that because the link is going via another asp page, you could do link tracking and see what the most popular outbound link is.
Hope this helps Marcel. |

Hi,
This is a new issue for me to study.
Could you through out some key words and phrases along the line of this discussion? I went to the link in Marcel's post and read about Google's project.
What brought this about?
Cheers,
Etymon

And how precisely was it doing that without being logged in ? |

Huw,
This appears to happen a lot on our Forum. Google "idiomacy" and the second hit at the moment is one of ours. ( http://www.wordwizard.com/ch_forum/post.asp?method=TopicQuote&TOPIC_ID=14594&FORUM_ID=15 )
Anyone can read posts and even click the "Reply" icon and get an edit window, but they can only actually post successfully if logged in. Thus, Googlebot can also "click" the "Reply" or "Reply with quote" icons. |

just because it can follow a link doesn't mean it was editing your topic. |

I think the approach mentioned using the ROBOTS.TXT file is easier ; just exclude pages like post.asp, post_info.asp etc to the list, and GoogleBot won't access them. |

Quite so, but it's not the ideal link to have on Google. |
