Hi there!

I'm so hoping some wise soul out there will be able to help on this one. I publish a weekly newsletter, and about two years ago I merged my subscriber database with the forum member database. The goal was that when people subscribed to the newsletter, they'd automatically be set up with a temporary forum username (their email address) and password.

I agree it's not the smartest way to do it, but originally people could click on a link in their profile and be taken to a page (elsewhere on the site) where they could change their username to something permanent.

Since I upgraded to 3.4.03 and moved to SQL, passwords got encrypted, and people were no longer able to change their usernames from that other page. So for the past year I've gotten at least 10 emails a day from people asking me to change their usernames. And it's starting to drive me nuts. (I have 36,000+ members, so the potential for mayhem here is significant.)

I know I'm probably dreaming here, but is there any bit of code I can change so that the username will be editable within the profile?

(I searched high and low before posting this question, but just in case I missed an obvious answer, please forgive me.)

Thanks very much for any help or insight you can provide!

I don't mean to dictate how to run your forum, but I think giving users the option of changing their username whenever they want to would also increase the potential for mayhem... Maybe you would be better off with a function that only allows new users to change their name once.

Oh yes, that'd be good too - basically anything allowing them to make the change, just once, or however many times, would be a huge, huge improvement over the way things are now.

Try searching. The issue has been discussed before, but I can't tell whether there was ever code posted for that.

Hi Rui - as I said in my original post, I searched quite extensively to try and find an answer to this question before posting. I couldn't find anything. That's why I finally asked. (And thank you again for helping with my SQL migration - you may not remember the ordeal, or at least I hope you don't, but you were a life-saver.)

(Edited to add that when I did previous searches on "changing username" or "change username" all I could find were questions about changing the admin's username/password - in this case it'd need to be everybody being able to change their username from the profile page.)

Hi Clara,

I did some searching myself, but haven't been able to find a mod. All I could find was a request similar to yours. So I'm afraid I have no knowledge of a mod for that purpose.

About the SQL ordeal, I have only a vague idea . Anyway, I hope that you've been enjoying your forum.

Thanks for trying, Rui! And yes, my forums have held up beautifully since the upgrade (knock on wood). Now it's just this older, newsletter subscriber integration stuff that's causing all the troubles.

Thanks again!
