Could someone tell me the difference between the two please? Should you "Approve pending/selected members" or just activate each account? Thanks |

Easiest way to explain it is in steps:
1. User registers on your site and details go in MEMBERS_PENDING table 2. You approve their account and an activation e-mail gets sent (for e-mail verification purposes) 3. User activates their account from the e-mail and details are transferred from MEMBERS_PENDING to "live" MEMBERS table.

Thanks, that's helpful. (I'd been wondering if Admin had to approve AND activate members/accounts as I can't get the email verification to work.) |

So what exactly happens when you click the Activate Account link? I did this for one pending member, and it appeared that it automatically activated the account without sending the user an email. So how do I make the system send them the email now that I have clicked this link? |

Why would you be activating accounts manually in the first place without informing the member? If you want members not to have to activate their account then turn that option off.

Shaggy, With a lack of documentation on what the Activate Account link actually does, and having my first member register on my new board, I clicked the link thinking that was what I was supposed to do.
Don't answer my question with a rhetorical question. Answer it with an answer, pelase. |

The fact that you were posting in a opic where I had explained the approval/activation process implied that you had read my post and were familiar with how those features worked.
If you want to send that one member an e-mail to let them know you've activated their account, you can do so from their profile.

Ok, here's how this works:
"Activate Account" will allow the admin to bypass any other activation requirements and make their accounts ready for use immediately. However, the member won't get any automatic confirmation so it would help if you emailed them yourself actually telling them that their account has already been activated manually by the admin.
This option is useful for many different reasons. It allows you to create an account for anyone you want without having to go through email confirmation. This is helpful for having multiple accounts for an admin and other moderators. Also, this option works if the email address provided by the member is lost, deleted, or not working. However, again, the member won't actually know you confirmed that account because there's no server notification. You'd have to manually inform them that you have activated their account and it's ready for immediate use. I don't recommend using this option unless you're trying to bypass email.
"Approve Pending/Selected Members" is only necessary when you have the option that requires the admin to approve each new member on. I forget what it's called at the moment.
"Approve Pending Members" means you click it and all members whose account has not yet been activated will be activated and they'll receive an email to their provided email saying that they must click on a link in that email and their account will then be fully operational. This means the admin accepts the member and then the member confirms that acceptance.
"Approve Selected Members" means you place a little check in the box to the right of each member and only those members will have their accounts approved by you. The rest works exactly like for "Approve Pending Members". The member gets an email and they click on the link in that email to confirm their registration.
Now, you said that your email doesn't work. This means you'd use the "Activate Account" option for each new member. However, this would also mean you'd have to find a way to contact each member and inform them that their account has been fully activated.
Does that make sense? |

Thank you, Shaggy, and CalloftheHauntedMaster. This information was very helpful. I took your advice and sent the member a private email telling them that their account was active.
Once mmore question, is there a way to email me (the administrator) letting me know that there are members waiting for approval? It seems a bit tedious and hit-or-miss if I need to log in each time to check and see if members are waiting for approval. An email notification could let me know right away, or even an SMS if I wanted. Any ideas?

Have a search of the mod forums here, there is at least one mod out there that sends an e-mail to the admin when a new user registers.

Without any modifications, there is no direct way. However, under your name, at the top bar, there should be a little bar that say "# members awaiting approval". Clicking on that and signing in will take you to the approval page directly.
Note that this bar automatically shows you when new members have applied. |

Check the two options (Email Validation and Restrict Registration). You will need to approve each member (NOT activate their accounts) and then they will have to validate their emails. |

I am having a problem. After I approve the account" it send the user an email. Which then instructs them to validat by clicking the link. Many users (if not all) are saying the link does not work. "The link is dead". Any suggestions...do you need to look at some code? If so, which files should I post? |
