A friend asked me for information on building a brouter for linux - bridging wireless to wired. not having a single clue what the hell he was on about and google not appearing to be very helpful i thought id ask here at the fountain of knowledge
you guys probably thinkin im just entirely stupid or braindead for being clueless about it but any chance you could explain/help? lol cheers dudes!

When you say "build" is he just looking for something to plonk on a whitebox and run as a router ? If so then maybe take a look at something like

www.smoothwall.org (firewall/router does support some wireless nics)
www.clarkconnect.com (pre built linux distro for router/SOHO style setup)

Both the above are free or at least have free versions.

If not then you could configure a normal *nix box fairly easily to bridge two network cards that are already configured .. have a look in the network howtos over at http://www.tldp.org/ there is bound to be info there.

btw a network "bridge" is nothing more than a way of connecting two diverse networks (often of different media type ie a wireless network to a wired one)

cheers gremlin, i think it was the first one he was after - don't know if he's got it working or not.

o and i know what a bridge is, but it was the 'building a brouter for linux' bit that threw me lol
