Hi all,
I've been fortunate to have a pretty well behaved community. Just curious to ask advice from some of you admins and moderators. When there is a topic that is getting heated (which I'm starting to see), is it better to lock the topic and shut it down? Or is it better to let people get it out of their systems and then let it pass?
My inclination is to just lock it so people who are po'ed don't say things that will make it worse. |

While I've been lucky enough as well to not have this problem, if it did come up I'd probably just lock the topic. If people try to continue the flames in other topics, lock those and warn them. If they still persist (most rational people won't get to this point), lock their member account. That will stop the flaming. |

You would usually install a smiley mod to get this working easily. |

I moderate on more than one forum and usually, if a thread/topic starts moving in a direction where they are attacking each other and have moved away from the discussion, then we would move to lock it.
There are times where a discussion will become heated, but it doesn't go off-topic nor does it attack anyone in the thread. We would allow that to continue.
But as soon as they start attacking each other and the topic serves no more purpose, we would lock it.
And it also depends on some sites. Some sites would allow it, meaning the bashing of each member and keep the convo going. Some are more strict. So it also depends on what kind of forum or site you are running and the members you are catering to. |

Thanks everyone. I locked the topic which will hopefully let people cool down. In my opinion, all opinions had been expressed and continued posts would have gone nowhere but down.
So far so good. |

I take the same approach as Davio - we've had some very heated debates over on MeTV in the past that have never threatened to degenerate into flame wars - s'pose I'm fortunate to have the member base I do.
However, on the rare occassions that newbies to try and destroy a good argument with petty insults, I usually leave things up to my moderators who will initially inform the offending poster that their commenst are uncalled for before deleting their posts or closing the thread if there's no chance of getting things back on track.

Actually, I've been lucky with a really a good member base too. If anyone here cares, what happened was someone registered and started emailing my members about his new forum. I locked the account as soon as I found out.
Eventually, I unlocked this person's account so that he could apologize. The guy is young and realized that he had made a mistake. I wanted to lock the post before a war started between my forum and his. Even though, I have a good member base, it seems that some were irritated enough by the guy's actions that they forgot that two wrongs do not make a right. That is, someone registered at the other forum posting "stop spamming me" etc. Needed to stop this before it got even worse. |
