I have tested this, and when banned users use an IP cloaking device, they still have access... Is there any way to prevent this? Maybe banning the IP address 000.000.000.000 |

That is a proxy service. If you ban that ip address, then you will ban everyone using that service, but you need to be careful doing this. A lot of ISP's have their members go through a proxy service so you can inevitably block hundreds, thousands of people.
IP address 000.000.000.000 does not exist either.
Here is the IP and info on the proxy/cloaking service you pointed out:

If I were to put in the Terms and Conditions of my forum that it is not allowed to use any IP cloaking device, then could I ban the IP range stated? Would that work to block out (at least) this service? |

you would not know all the cloaking services out there. there are a lot of proxy services available to those wanting to surf the internet anonymously at work, or simply they are behind a proxy server at their place of business which is very typical. In fact, as I type this, my address will show my proxy server address and not my workstation address.
is it really that big a deal? |

Not really, just trying to find a solution for this "bug" in the IP Gate mod, if you can call it a bug. |

Which version of IPGate you have? 2.3 is newest released version There was an update to it a while back which addressed 'unknown' and 000's for ip addy.
If (Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_CLIENT_IP") <> "") and (lcase(Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_CLIENT_IP")) <> "unknown") then
userip=Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_CLIENT_IP")
else
if (Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR") <> "") and (lcase(Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR")) <> "unknown") then
userip=Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR")
else
if (Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_ADDR") <> "") and (lcase(Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_ADDR")) <> "unknown") then
userip=Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_ADDR")
else
userip="999.999.999.999"
end if
end if
end if

It will attempt to find the best way to ban, it will look for the forwarded for ip of the user using the proxy, if it can't find the ip then it will use the proxy ip. If you have to u se the proxy ip and accidently ban an innocent person, You can add that person's name and ip and set expire ban and leave that record there and then the innocent user should be able to use the site.
The cookie function of this version is improved so using cookies may help you get the user and if the banned cookie is located on thier machine, then it will automatically add the new name. |
