I have used this utility called Caliper from Iconico for about 2 years:

http://www.iconico.com/caliper/index.aspx

It is a great tool, and so are the other utilities he has there.

Recently I came across something I think it a nicer called Ruler:

http://www.sliver.com/dotnet/ruler/

For all you perfectionist out there, I definitely recommend it.

No, it's not a joke I guess! It can be quite handy to measure the pixel distances of images without making a screencap and selecting it in MS Paint (For instance).

not to measure a screen, but graphics on a screen. very useful when measuring things OUTSIDE of a paint program. it gives you the exact pixel length and height of an item. here is an example of it in real use:

I wanted to know the dimensions of this image WITHOUT the shadow area included. The Ruler's tooltip gave me length and height of the item in pixels.

I think I prefer Screen Calipers from Iconico. Don't ask me why though...

I thought so too at first, but then realized how bulky caliper was and the fact that it couldn't give you area details. There may be times I still use caliper though.

I admit, I didn't really give Ruler a try, so I went by the screenshots only. Maybe if I had to use such a tool more often, I would consider switching, but I only use it maybe once a month and only to check general sizes, so there's very little reason to switch for me.

By the way, when you say area details, do you mean setting up two rulers to get the height and width? If so, just open two calipers and change the orientation on one of them. Easy enough.
