I have started learning a little bit of Flash, and I was wondering if it were possible for a Flash file to grab variables from the ASP page it's integrated in. For example, if variable1 = "1" then the flash will display something (say a menu item), but if variable1 <> "1", the item is hidden.

Yes that is possible using loadvariables in flash actionscript.

Take a look here for a tutorial explaining the basics and developing it in a flash guestbook.
