When I shut down my PC via start - shut down it all of a sudden has starting reboot instead of shutdown.

I run Win XP Pro on a Fujitsu Siemens computer. I suspect this started after installing an update from windows update but I can't remember what update it was..

that happened to me a few times and found that it was a setting in the bios, usually the "wake up on" setting, either for lan, modem etc.
Check it out if you like and try to turn it off if it's on any setting maybe this will help.

Hm... I didn't change any settings in the bios but I'll have a look.
One more thing that has been happening lately, I hear a "click" or "clack" or similar sound from one of the harddrives and then the computer freeze completely. Only thing I can do is shut it down with the power button.

any sounds from your hard disk are *always bad* - replace it ASAP as it's cruising for catastrophic failure. Sounds like your whole box is ill, though, so maybe consider taking this chance to rebuild the OS on a new disk and do some hardware upgrades at the same time?

I will =) It's time for a reinstall anyways.. Too bad I can't use the warranty on the disc. (it's a home pc I got from work, and I can't send it on service because we're not allowed to install new hardware in the computer...)

just curious, what brand, size and age is that HD.
(quietly I'm betting the name starts with S, over the years I had 5 of those turn into paperweights...:) )

I have a similar problem that started with the Win XP Home SERVICE PACK 2
Only I would use System Standby which worked fine before Service Pack 2

Now the machine goes dark but the fan stays running. The power button has to be held in for four seconds to turn it off. Yuk!

Its only this one machine; my laptop works okay and my shop computer works okay after Service Pack 2.

zinpin: actually I don't know what brand it is, size is 70Gb. I'm not allowed to open the case (well, I might have done it when installing the other disc and tv-card and so on but don't tell anyone hehe) so I don't have that much info on what's inside.
Neither do the support, I was asking them for drivers to de dvd and cd-burner. They didn't know what hardware I had, only that it was the same or similar to the hardware in the description that followed with the computer.
They have removed all labels and put their own labels there instead so it's kinda hard to update drivers...
