This is probably a stupid question but here goes, is it important to delete a mod's dbs file after installing it? If yes, why?

The most important thing would be to NOT re-run the dbs files. Let's say you install the Private Messages (PM) mod ... use it for a few months, then run the dbs again, the first thing it does is drop the tables and you loose all your data. This is typical of most dbs files I've seen.
