I noticed that Yahoo's search toolbar had a spyware remover. Because I know I have spyware I decided to download it and it said it found about 50 spyware packages as well as five trojans. I removed them all.
I trust the Yahoo! toolbar as well as the Google toolbar. Do you think this spyware remover truly worked?
I would err on the side of caution - some suppoosedly anti-spyware actually uses alarmist techniques (and funnily always claims 52 infections).
I prefer to think in terms of trust in a partnership - once it has been broken (ie your machine got dirty) it is nearly impossible to restore 'just like that'. Personally, I prefer a rebuild (new girlfriend? Analogy wearing thin) before having absolute trust again.
Paranoid? Maybe, maybe not - what got onto your PC whilst it was in a comprimised state? How did the spyware get there? What else did the trojans install? Am I rootkitted?
