I know, I know another UK question.

I'm surfing the UK real estate sites for a home and I've got a few questions.

Semi detached sounds pretty self explanitory. But what is a Mews house? What's the difference between that and a terraced house. They seem to look the same in the pictures.

Mews is probably a smaller/shorter terrace, maybe without a road at the front (or in a dead-end). Or a really pretentious estate agent. Could go either way ;-)

just to expand on what pdrg said, a mews normally doesn't have a "proper road", normally just a footpath or alleyway at the front. They tend to build a lot of small starter homes in a very tiny space which they call a "mews"

House prices in the UK are astronomical right now, particularly in the south and south-east. I struggled to buy my first house a few months ago and I'm fairly well paid. It's almost impossible for most first-time buyers.

Then again, I can imagine Japanese house prices are a bit out there, too.

There's rumours of a price crash soon, possibly up to 30%. I'm still renting as nothing I want is affordable with current prices

Some of my UK ex-pat colleages have suggested Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Altrincham, Hale, Tytherington, Bollington(?), etc. They all do it with the enthusiasm of someone who is proud of where they're from, which really makes you smile.

They're all quite a bit higher on the company food chain than I am and I'm not exactly sure I could afford to live where they do.

Well, to put things in perspective... I currently live in a 79 square meter (850 Sq. ft.) apartment in a fairly affluent neighborhood in the middle of Osaka about five minutes walk to the local train station. (I'm renting, of course.)

When new about 15 years ago the place when for an eyepopping $455,000 US (about 255,000 pounds). It's not even anywhere near the top floor. Today, 10 years after the Japanese real estate meltdown began, the owners couldn't even unload it for $272,000 US.

Now to me, $272,000 US is still eyepopping.

$272,000 ~ £150,000 - mate I wish you luck in that range, but prices are generally lower in the North, where you're aiming. You will find something up there for that I'm pretty sure, just may not be as grand as you'd get in USA for the same cash... Maybe 2 bedrooms, but not a big place for that money.

The areas you're looking in are all OK afaik, and will not be out-of-range for somewhere small.

I rent, despite earning a mint, as I missed any chance to get on the buyers ladder, and face no chance now with the over-inflated prices here. I too am hoping for a housing slump but doubt it'll hit -30% which is what I'd really need!!

It sounds like the slightly more posher area of Cheshire which isn't far from Manchester. I bet there is a huge difference in prices between Cheshire and some parts of Manchester like Moss Side.

Don't worry Paddy. I'm rooting for a housing slump too. We don't have the savings in pounds for a downpayment.

I'm planning to rent. Until the UK transfer came through, My wife and I were planning to head back to the US. We've been sending our savings to the US because the exchange rate was favorable. Now that it's there, we kind of stuck. If we were convert dollars to pounds, the dollar to pound rate would kill us.

You'd be right from what I hear.

By the way, what do you think would be a reasonable rent to pay on a 2-3 bedroom house in a nice neighborhood? We're paying about 160,000 yen a month now (about 820 pounds/mo) and I'd like to keep it in the same range in the UK.

In Oxford which has a very high rental price you would be looking at a 3 bed for around £850, in the outlying villages it drops to £700 for a 3 bed. In cheshire you would be loking in the region of say £5-600 for a 3 bed depending where it is.

I bloody don't! Just spent 200 grand on a house, don't want to be stuck with a place I can't afford to sell!

Well, I guess we'll be OK then. Thanks for all of the advice and comments.

I wouldn't worry, Mark. Even if there was a housing slump, I'd wager that you'd get your investment back over the long term.
