If you've ever read SF, such as Rendezvous with Rama there are descriptions of chimps doing routine maintenance tasks on board spaceships (or similar). this strikes me as a great idea. The chimps (called "simps" actually) were specially genetically bred to be non-aggressive and sexless. communication with them was through sign language.

It must be infinitely easier to train one of those up rather than spend millions researching robotics, with all their associated problems of vision / movement systems.
Is this type of research being done ? I know the russians have used dolphins in the past to attach explosive devices to submarines,etc.
It's certainly an interesting research topic !
