I've been asked to compile a short list of sites that "do it right".
Basically, it comes down to this:
Sites with a good layout, including (if present) the way the shopping cart and checkout are handled.

Right now I have an extremely limited list of apple.com (nice tabbed layout) and amazon.com (great shopping cart).

I'd like to ask for a little help on this. What sites do you like? Try to limit them to English sites only, and if possible with a limited "scope" (not too broad content-wise).

I like www.yarnmarket.com ... the site is very easy to find yarns and checkout etc. The only thing I don't like is that the order status lists all orders ever made in their entirety rather than just links to drill down further (makes for a very long page if you have several orders).

Thanks Nikkol, that's a nicely set up site.

How important would the following features be:
- view old orders
- wish list feature
- order as gift for 3rd party (for a community-style shop)

1. for the site example I gave, very ... that way I can see types and colors I've purchased before if I need more.
2. wish list not so much for me, but it is nice to have for some people.
3. gift ordering depending on what is sold. in the case of amazon, yes. not so much if the site sold dog food.

I'd give more info to make it easier to know what I need and why I'm asking, but I'm under a strict NDA, so I can't say much without saying too much

Thanks though, your answers have given me enough to go by

  • I can search and find what I want
  • placing an order, tracking it and order history are easy
  • creating a wishlist for others to order gifts for you is easy to create and easy for your friends to use
