I have had my Snitz board for 3 wonderful years and am having a serious problem for the first time. I am would like to ask those of you who moderate/administer busy boards how you deal with lunatics who attack your site?
I very rarely have had to resort to disciplining my members, however, I recently acquired a problem person who started making nasty personal attacks on those who disagreed with him. After asking him repeatedly to be civil, I had to resort to deleting his posts containing personal attacks. This only escalated the situation and I had to lock his membership. I used to allow anonymous posting (Davio's MOD) but I've had to shut that off because of this guy as well. I also have had to turn on the Moderator features and start approving every post.
This guy has proceeded to attack other portions of my website, a guestlog page and my personal email link, to continue to send hate mail. I have his IP addresses logged, but am not sure as to how far I need to go to get this to stop.
I can't be the only one out there who's had a psycho that they can't get rid of...how have you all handled such in the past?
Thanks for your suggestions!

I had a user that did all those things, luckily he was a "local" and after (using his IP and his e-mail) getting to know his real name, address, SSN, photo and lots of other stuff, I e-mailed his boss (he used a work e-mail account) and explained what had happened and he took care of the rest, the person got really scared because I had som much information, in so short time (2hrs) hehe. Now in my case there was another person who had borrowed this person's computer and the owner made him apologize to all members on the forum. I published the apology anonymous for him because this is a pretty small town and he could have been mysteriously injured if his real name got public. =)

If you have his IP, and can use something like ARIN or samspade to locate his ISP, and maybe google around in case he uses the same username elsewhere on the web, you may be able to build a profile of the nasty user. If any of the remarks are slanderous/aggressive/etc he is probably breaking *some* laws, so pass it up to the ISP or threaten legal action (if you're in the USA, where that seems to be the standard approach to anything). Or send in the heavies...! |

Instead of moderating each post, why don't you turn off registrations for a short while and remove all of this members content. I've had a couple of troublesome members over the past two years, at first I give them a friendly warning, if that fails I tell them what will happen to their posts if they continue. The next step is to delete or edit their posts until they get the message. If they complain on the boards, I also remove those messages and tell them to email any complaints to admin (as per the registration agreement). |

I go as far as banning them by using a reverse DNS lookup. This makes sure any IP he can get on from his ISP will be blocked. It will block a certain town or geographical area. |

No MOD, just a bit more work to check the IP against where you think the member lives. I have a few trouble makers as well, they know to change IPs, but they can't change where they live One even thinks that he can fool use by switching ISPs, but he only does it for email so that's easily spotted as well. |

Tell me about it I've been banning him for 6 months, and he still reckons he has 4 memberships I haven't found yet. Safe to say my member approval process is well sorted out now |
