Surfing around the net, Iīm surprised how many websites donīt consider 800x600 screen resolutions. The biggest sites online that publish their stats show around 30% use 800x600 - thatīs a lot of users.

Here are the stats from one of the largest companies in the US:

Screen resolutions 01 Jul 2004:

1. 1024 x 768 pixels 59.88%
2. 800 x 600 pixels 29.66%
3. 1280 x 1024 pixels 4.63%
4. Other Resolutions 2.73%
5. 1152 x 864 pixels 2.02%

I always consider 800x600 and above.

One of my sites (not snitz based) keeps track of screen resolutions when people register with the site. Here is the number of people I had for June 2004:

1024 x 768	378	53.92%
1280 x 1024	152	21.68%
800 x 600	68	9.70%
1152 x 864	44	6.28%
1600 x 1200	23	3.28%
1280 x 960	11	1.57%
1400 x 1050	8	1.14%
1280 x 800	4	0.57%
1280 x 720	2	0.29%
1440 x 900	2	0.29%
2048 x 1536	2	0.29%
640 x 480	2	0.29%
1800 x 1440	1	0.14%
1920 x 1200	1	0.14%
1344 x 840	1	0.14%
1280 x 854	1	0.14%
1024 x 721	1	0.14%

[edit]
BTW... we still design for 800x600

Is this a web design or programming site ? The first specially tend to attract people with higher resolutions.

Neither; It is a manufacturing company.

Our viewers are typically Electrical Engineers, with a few computer programmers, downloading datasheets, manuals, software, etc...

we have similar stats from the DIPEx website (it is also designed as 800x600 and looks pretty odd on my 1600x1200 21" monitor)

Having said that, please don't all rush out and recode your sites for a higher resolution, just remember that mobile computing is on the increase and more and more people will be viewing your sie using much smaller resolutions, my PDA is only 640x480 and is the largest you can currently get on a PDA.

So please stick to 800x600 (they scale very well on pocket IE)
