Hi, I was just wondering if there's anyway of finding out if your forum is causing memory leaks etc.
I'm allowed 10GB bandwidth a month, but last month I hit 19Gb and got charged £57, and I'm still going over so far in this month!
I don't have large downloads, and I've got rid of shared files because I though that might be athe problem.
The reason I thought it may be being caused by a leak or something (i'm not very clued up on this stuff), is because I occasionally received the '500' error, or a 'Service not available' error. I contacted my host, and they said they had moved my account into a different MS Pool (!?) So I looked around, and found that it could be a leak caused by not closing off connections to databases correctly.
At the moment I've closed my forums down, because I don't want to inccur any more fines.
Any help on this would be great!
Thanks for your time! |

memory and bandwidth aren't the same thing.
Does your host provide a way for you to view your usage? |

I wasn't sure if the leaks could cause the database to be opened more times than needed, and so causing more data to be transfered.
Yeah, I have a way of finding out the usage, and it's close to 1GB a day, and I never thought this could be possible because my sites aren't that busy, and don't have any downloads.
I was thinking about using Speedball, but it doesn't offer as many MODs as the standard Snitz. I might try the standard Snitz code, with no MODs installed, and see how it goes. If not, I'll just have to step up to the next hosting plan (£19.99 per month, instead of my current £9.99 per month) - Do people think www.oneandone.co.uk (MS Hosting options), are relatively cheap? |

How detailed are the usage stats? Does it break it out into what is using the most usage? (i.e. which page uses the most bandwidth) |

Theres no reason why you can't apply the same mods to the speedball version as you would a standard Snitz, you do have to do a little more work matching some of the changes/lines up, but it's still not too difficult to do. For the extra bonus of being able to use CSS and the reduction in bandwidth and a possible perceived increase in speed sometimes too, I still think its worth trying. |

It doesn't actually say what bandwidth is being used for each page, but it tells me how many times that page has been visited. For example:
For one week:
Rank Popular Pages Page Views % 1 ckyalliance.co.uk/forum/topic.asp 8145 21.71% 2 ckyalliance.co.uk/forum/cal.asp 6131 16.34% 3 ckyalliance.co.uk/forum/active.asp 5452 14.53% 4 mortioli.co.uk/forums/cal.asp 3777 10.07% 5 ckyalliance.co.uk/forum/default.asp 2562 6.83% 6 ckyalliance.co.uk/forum/active_users.asp 1865 4.97% 7 ckyalliance.co.uk/forum/forum.asp 1632 4.35% 8 ckyalliance.co.uk/forum/pop_profile.asp 1085 2.89% 9 ckyalliance.co.uk/forum/post_info.asp 1007 2.68% 10 ckyalliance.co.uk/default.asp 830 2.21%
Date Day Page Views 6/14/2004 Monday 16,093 6/15/2004 Tuesday 14,260 6/16/2004 Wednesday 7,161
The Wednesday figure is only for the 'Site closed' page, but the average page views is approx. 15,000 a day, of which approx. 1,900 are unique visitors.

The only MODs I think I'll be using from now on, would be Private Messages, Polls and maybe Events, so I think I'll give SpeedBall a go once I get home from work.
Is it a big reduction in bandwidth usage?

Do you have access to your log files? Someone might of stored some large files on your site and the best way to find out if this is the truth is by either looking at your detailed statistics or your log files.
Yeah, I have access to the log files, but when I download them, I haven't been able to find a program that can cope with the size of them. I don't allow people to store files on my site now (I removed shared files after the first over usage), but we're still going over our allocated amount. |

15000 page views a day would not account for 1Gb of traffic bandwidth will be consumed by image files or zips not your asp pages.
If you email me ftp details I will analyse the logs for you. |

Sent Huwr!
This is a list of mods that are installed on my forum:
Private Messages Poll Mod Events Active Users IP Gate Hover Colours Avatars In topic.asp, it also shows info about the first post (date, time etc) In default.asp, it shows the title of the last post Topic Info (mouseover in topic.asp) Below peoples posts it shows 'Post # of #', Country, Sex, Member Since date
That doesn't include admin tools like Newsletter etc
Would they be what's causing the high bandwidth? |

doesn't really matter how large the images are, they will all contribute to the excessive bandwidth. 35KB is far too large for an avatar. Consider 15 responses on a page, each with a 30KB avatar - that's 450KB *just* for the avatars on one pageview (admittedly, client-caching will ease the pain a little if your readers are regulars) |

what was on the page cal.asp? many images? Also how about the images on the site itself - well optimized? I managed to optimize this logo to 5K (from 11K) without much visual distortion... |
