I'm going to add Adsense to my forum and wanted to know where the best place on the forum would be so that the content is correctly targeted to the content of the forum.
I prefer that the Adsense goes at the top below the header. Anyone have experience with this? |

Topic.asp is the place for the best content-based advert's. I've put Google on every page, except those that shouldn't have advert's on them. |

Do you think I could put it in the header? |

I've put them in several places, in the sidebar (a skyscraper ad) and in the topics (banner). However, I've also changed some small thing ; I've parsed the contents of the topic into the KEYWORDS metatag, in order to improve content-targeting.
"<meta name=""keywords"" content=""" & Trim(CleanCode(TopicMessage)) & """>" & vbNewline You will have to retrieve the TopicMessage value prior to this though.
Also, be sure to NOT show these ads on topics from hidden fora, members only fora etc. |

You CAN show the ad's on hidden sites, just not on "thank you" pages etc.
Why use META tags, the spiders work just fine without them. I thought most other search engines ignored meta's these days anyway ? |

Sorry to break into the topic, but why can't you use them on thank you pages? |

Becuase the Google AUP/TOS for Adsense states its forbidden to put it on any "transient" pages like thank you ones. There are other types of pages as well that they request you not put the ads on. |

Two answers: If you show ads on hidden pages, the google adsense engine will try to access that page, and for Adsense it will be saying something like 'You need to be logged in...' etc.) So, the only ads you'll be getting are about security, passwords etc.
Why use META tags ? Because the Google Adsense engine generating the ads for your page looks for keywords. Because of the navigation and stuff (at oxle there's the sidebar for isntance) it collects the keywords NOT from the topic itself but from the things around it. And you'd not want that, you'd want the ads to be related to the topic contents, wouldn't you ? So, simply present those keywords to the adsense engine in the Keywords Metatag, and you're done.
