So here I am and I went through all this trouble to get Subscriptions up and running and... er... then I discovered that instead of mailing out the post, it just taunts you that someone posted.
I've been working on the code a plenty to get it to do what I call "True Subscriptions", actually sending the message in HTML.
So I've been wondering, is there a reason why Subscriptions weren't done this way to begin with? Am I going to be very, very sorry when I stumble across something that turns out to be the reason why this was never done to begin with? Or could this be something good that might be implemented eventually as a mod? |

You could, but if you send them the entire post, it diminishes the reasons for returning to the forums. That's the main reason it was done the way it was... |

In January, I started sending the members of my organization e-mail announcements in HTML, and now I wouldn't know what I would do without it.
Heck, the @*%&$ spammers make use of it constantly, I figured, why not use it for e-mail that's NOT selling something.
My main concern, was that there was some foreboding reason that I would be forced to tie up server resources by trying to implement this. But I have almost got the prototype up and running on my IIS server here at home, and it seems to require only a little more work for the server than formatting a single reply in the topic.asp
As far as bringing people back to the site, I need to first convince my users to use the forums in the first place, instead of the e-mail lists they use now.
I placed links in the html just like the ones in the real topic.asp so that almost anything they click in the mail brings them back to log in and then redirects them. I had to alter the redirecting a bit to get it to work.
Perhaps at some point this feature could be added to Snitz. You could let members decide if they want HTML sent in the subscriptions. (Or even possible plain text)
My code is a bit sloppy right now... I'm in the process of cleaning it up, completing the implementation and painstakingly documenting it (Nikkol, you would be very familiar with the methodology I've been using to document everything, I learned it from you ) |
