I just applied the Shared Files mod -- so perhaps I should post in that topic, but I'm not sure that's completely the problem. In any case, I now have to repeatedly log in as most of the things I do on the board (most especially posting or editing messages) somehow "loses" my login.

This has been true of my users as well, but it's particularly annoying as even going to admin functions (and logging as admin) and then doing *anything* suddenly says "You must login" or "only registered users can do this" etc. etc. Anyone have a clue where to start troubleshooting this?

try deleting your cookies, closing all browsers and trying again.

Yes, I've done this -- and it helps for the very next session.

Then it's back to asking me to login about 20 times each session. Just now I went to add a new group -- it asked for my admin login (natch) and then when I tried to select "Add group" it asked me again. Then it immediately asked me for the forum login. Then it asked me for my admin login again. Finally it took me to the group add screen, I made my changes and pressed accept... it asked me to login again. And three more times. Then I went back into the loop and *finally* it took my changes, brought me back to the board... and asked me to login again.

Just what the heck is going on? (As I said, I'm not alone, at least three other users are experiencing this).

perhaps it has something to do with the session settings on the server?

also, do you have any firewall in place?

I'm pretty sure it had to do with the mod I put in, since it didn't do this before I did the file sharing mode. But... no firewall. And another board I have hosted on the same server doesn't have these problems (it doesn't have the file sharing mode either).

Is there someplace in particular in the code where I could look for this problem? I'd don't even know where to start unless I back out the file sharing code (which I'd really hate to do now).

Some more information that might give someone a clue how to help me here -- it seems to be related to the browser I'm using.

I normally use Mozilla, and that's where the problem seems to occur most often. I switched over to IE 6 and it seems a whole lot better (doesn't log me out nearly as much, although still just a little). Also, the problem seems to occur over time: that is, I get in first thing and it seems fine for a while, but after I've been reading posts for a bit and come back in then it's terrible again. Once I exit Mozilla and start back up it works again for a while... and then bad.

So I still can't figure out any pattern, and any ideas (and I mean any) would be appreciated.

Is the date/time setting on your computer correct?

Yes, I use AboutTime, which sets it to the current Greenwich timestamp.

At this point I'm believing it has to do with an older version of Mozilla. I switched to the newest and haven't had any problems (so far). My users haven't been screaming since I told them to update to the latest browser version of whatever they used, so perhaps that was all it was (although it was *very* annoying).
