Wow, I just upgraded my DSL account, now I have 3mbs/sec downloads. I clocked it on cnet at 2.8mbs/sec. I can't believe how fast it is now... ok, time to try the games out.

I'm spoiled rotten like that too. When I started I had about 1.2mb/s, then they upgraded it to 1.5, then to 2.x (can't remember exactly) and now I'm at 4mb/s download. It's awesome to see a file of several megs download in mere seconds.
The downside of it is the aggravation when you are forced to use a slower connection speed... |

Roadrunner Cable Modem service here started at 2mb/384kbs and recently when to 3mb/384kbs. Now they are offering 6mb/512kbs for about $20/mth more. I haven't upgraded yet, but I might in the future. |

I'm already paying a lot for my DSL, and the extra speed isn't necessary for what I do online, not to mention that most severs don't even let me download at full speed (only my ISP and a few big name software vendors). |

I had nothing but trouble with Roadrunner... I'd have at least 2 days a month without service. Mostly because they would be working on the cable lines in my area.

That's funny. When I first moved to Japan (third time around) I thought the RoadRunner cable modem I had in the US was hot stuff. But ADSL here is at 12 mbs AND my apartment building just put in the equipment needed for 100 mbs fiber optic connections.

Here in the states things are spread out quite a bit more than Japan. In Japan it's a lot more feasable to run fiber to most places because of the short distances involved. |

Yeah, I know. When they put in the fiber optics for the building, they pretty much covered 126 families in one shot. 6 families per floor time 21 floors. There are at least 20 more such buildings within a ten minute walk from home. (Japan is pretty densely packed. )
Dave, come on over! I'd trade you the 100 mbs fiber optics for my old place in LA anytime.

ADSL in Japan is not to be believed. In front of every train station, shopping mall or popular gathering spot, you'll see Yahoo! BB salespeople GIVE you a home ASDL setup kit with ADSL Modem to take home FREE when you sign up. For about $5/mo. they bump you up from 12mbs to 24. |
