I was just curious, who has installed the most amount of mods to a Snitz forum and did anyone think of documenting their trials and tribulations regarding such a bold feat?

I have been using my own server to host a forum-based site for a very small group of users (8 total), and I hope to venture out into cyberspace and put up my own domain on somebody's hosting service. I would be interested in somebody who has systematically implemented a butt-load of mods and actually have it documented in a well-maintained page format.

See, there are plenty of cool mods and some should probably be installed before others, whether its because its easier or whatever. I am not sure if I would use all the mods, but I would like to install as many as possible but alleviate any potential mishaps/downtime when the site is actually live.

I have a relatively low asp knowledge base, its not non-existent but its low, so correcting/implementing mods does not scare me but I find it difficult at times to trouble shoot code because of this. If there was a log/journal of someone's methods, it would be pretty cool.

As a newbie to Snitz, I like you have a very low knowledge of ASP. But I figure unless I get my hands dirty I won't learn anything. Don't know how useful this advice will be to you.

I have installed about a dozen mods to my forum varying in complexity, and managed to back out two of them (one was the very first mod I implemented) without re-starting with fresh install and without too much trouble. I maintain a full bakcup of my site at all times. But yery important, backup your db immediately before proceeding. In my case its ACCESS, so it is very easy to ftp back and forth. Also backup the files to be modified. Next, I maintain a spreadsheet matrix of the new files and modified files for each mod. This is what allowed me to backout those couple of mods, as it told me which new mod files to delete and which files to apply the reverse mod changes.

I don't know if some of the experts here have better ways of tracking mods, but so far this has worked for me. I don't have a test site either, so all my changes have been live during the wee hours of the night. Fortunately, my site isn't all that big yet. Backups work a treat in this case.

cheers,
Nat

Hi, cooldirk.

I recommend you to read the "general guide" to installing MODs made by NorwegianViking, really worth the time. I does not refer to any particular MOD, but it's a good compilation of methods.

You can find it here

Best Regards

Nertz, there is a MOD named "MOD commander plus", that just helps you track the MODs you have installed, their install guides and some links.

When I built my last forum, this is the first MOD I installed, and from then on I recorded the needed information regarding every other MOD.

I think I downloaded it from SnitzBitz.

Mod commander, hmmm, may have to check that out. And, yes, I will certainly read NorwegianViking's article. I just think it would be cool if someone had all the modded files in one handy dandy zip file, you setup the dbase path, permissions on the dbase, run setup.asp and config everything(mods) in the admin console. Hey, you dont want to use the portal mod, just keep it off, etc. Not to mention a good way to install stuff.

One thing that prompted me is that I have often screwed up my forums allowing downtime that is acceptable now but not in the future when there's more visitors. I guess I could be looked at as being lazy but backing stuff up, making changes, seeing if they work, then troubleshooting only to find it isnt working and then having to revert back, **sighs** can be truly time consuming.

I recently installed calendar events mod and then poll mod. Weelll my stuff got messed up so that my guys couldnt even view a topic. I posted on the boards, got a response but the result was the same. Not the helper's fault, afterall they are trying their d@mndest to help. I ended up having to make a decision, what do I want to do now. It may be something easily fixed, like install this then that, its easier and you will have better luck doing it that way. Getting into another topic here so i will end this little subject...

Those sites, wii, are sweet and look nice. Very busy sites, they have a lot of stuff going on. I wouldnt mind incorporating much of what they have into my own but, again, my asp is limited. Hell, I cant even move the links 'Home | Members |' etc moved, or resized without getting some asp error.

In the meantime, I will keep my eyes open and check out the forums religously and chug along as best I can with the help and support of the nice Snitz community.

I think one of the Modded forums would be great for you, cooldirk. Images one would work wonders for you.

If you dont do this, you could always use something like Brinkster for testing, and then move the Modded fiels to your live forum, after running the DBS files. Have a look at Wii's site.

It's a good idea, I once proposed (I think that in the "suggest content" forum) to have a list of "case studies", or something similar, where experienced users could post, and specially new users could read, about suggested configurations and MODs to install a forum for different uses:
1) A corporate Intranet
2) A public forum for gaming users
3) A public site for artistic events in a city

... whatever use you may think.

However:
quote:
Hey, you dont want to use the ?????????? mod

I would never dare to say something like this even if the case studies existed, I would just suggest these that I consider more useful. I tested like 40 MODs in a development stage for my forum, and finally installed 13 in the final version; many of them were not useful at all for me, and for the specific needs I had at that moment, but I know that all the other MODs authors have done a good job programming it and sharing it with us. Maybe if my forum was thought for another use, this MOD would have saved me tons of programming hours. This is the best thing of this community, don't you think?

Best Regards
