I soon have the option to upgrade to an MS Sql database, but it limits it too 150 MB. Currently my Access database is 140 MB, so I was wondering if there is a size difference between the two databases?
Eg, does 1 MB on Access = 1 MB on MS Sql?
I've tried to find an answer, but was unlucky.
Thanks for your help! |

No it doesn't, unfortunately. and there is no hard and fast rule that I am aware of, it entirely depends on your database, but would generally expect one of that size to be smaller in SQL than access.
I have a few forum dbs of varying sizes, will run a couple of tests to give you a rough idea. |

Just something to consider. Have you tried compacting/repairing the database? Especially if you've pruned data out of it. It can significantly shrink the size of the database. |

And if it is still that big after compacting then you will run out of space pretty soon in your 150Mb DB, you will only gain a few meg in the upgrade to sql (maybe 10 Mb max) so you will not have that much room to play with. |

I haven't got round to compacting or repairing it...it always timesout when I'm attempting to do it through Snitz, so I have to download it and re-upload it, and it's finding the time to do that
I'll give it a go though, and see how much difference it makes!
I'd be interested to see your results HuwR |

sorry, those were the results, if 140Mb is the actual size after compressing, then you will gain around 10Mb converting to SQL, If you have not compacted it then as Dave said it should make a big improvement.
If you don't mind giving me ftp access to it, I can download and compact it for you, I have a very quick connection, just email me your details, I would however advise taking your forum ofline while it is done.

I downloaded my database earlier, and just compacted it...from 138 MB to 86.4 MB
I'll have to decide on a quiet time to do it properly and upload it afterwards. Thanks for the offer...I'll keep it in mind |
