trying to get ready for my first visit back to the UK in 2.5 years and am trying find out :
will my US notebook work in the UK on a UK power supply.
i.e. I still have my old power supply for my first notebook that I bought in the UK.
it fits in on the notebook end - but I want to know if I need some kind of additional adaptor or not.
Compaq's help line was as useful as a chocolate kettle
Any ideas ?

hmmm...
called these guys up : http://www.impactron.co.uk/powerkit.htm
(who by the way were the most helpful people I have spoken to today - and I did n't have to hold on for 1 hour waiting and then go through 6 different option sequences)
They stated that usually notebooks would be ok on either 240 or 110
If anyone else has additional views - please let me know.

So does it matter if you take your note book to the UK? Or do you need another PS? |

Power supplies usually work both with 110 and 220 V. What you may need is a plug adapter. I need one when i visited the UK and I guess I needed one as well when I visited the US. But the PS didn't need to change. |

The thing that I find funny about getting INTO the USA (this is pre- 9/11, so it's probably worse now), is that they (the security people, and yes I know we have to have them) gte me to open up the laptop case, pull out the lappy, and THEN they say "Is that a computer ?" .... I never had the guts to come out with a funny punchline, and it's not really the place to joke about it.
Power plugs ?? .. check your voltage range on the PS. It usually has 110-240, so that cover every country. The pins will be different, but a $5 adaptor usually fixes that. |

.....finally got through to someone with a little more knowledge at Compaq.
They told me the US after the model number - i.e. Compaq Presario 2580US
does not apparently mean US spec. hmmmm - I always thought it did.
Anyway... they tell me it will be fine on 240V and that all the notebooks made by HP / Compaq now can run on either voltage or anything in between.
i.e. laser is correct.... so my old ps should / will work.
Note : if you do not hear back from me after next Thursday - I have blown myself up

Oh, c'mon, laser!
I'm flying from Spain to California next week, with my laptop, socket adapter and everything.
But now, once you've told us about the security people's concerns, if they happen to ask me if my laptop is really a computer or an undeclared freight of fried chicken, I will surely won't be able to avoid bursting out laughing
If I am finally arrested I will tell everybody that it's your fault |
