Hi Brad
A hub alone will not get you anywhere. You need an Access Point for your Wireless Lan (WLAN). This is connected to the hub, and will transmit the signals to your wireless nic card. Remember to set the encryption on the Access Point and on the PC, so no-one can read you traffic. |
kind regards NorwegianViking

Sorry NorwegianViking but thats actually what I meant. At the location it has DSL that I will need to get the wireless router.
I used to have one of the older linksys and it worked decent, but always went offline and had all kinds of problems. Chad how is your network? How close are you to your router? Does it go thru walls? how about thru a couple walls and then to the patio? |

Brad, at what speed does your internal wireless run at? Just go pick up a cheap linksys 802.11b or 802.11g wireless router. I have one, works good, goes far, through walls, no problems, etc.... |

You probably don't need a router, just an Access Point will probably suffice if you already have a swtich/hub or router, AP's are generally cheaper than routers as well. Linksys make some good ones, grab an 802.11g one you'll have backwards compatiabilty with 11b as well anyway.
My 2.4Ghz cordless phone kicks my AP offline no matter what channel I use which is annoying .. think I'll just change phones lol! |

I use this at home :
RCA DCW615R
Image
Product Specs
2 desktops connected to it physically and 4 notebooks by wireless.
Got this about eight months ago - and has been great - although there are probably many better ones around now.... I was in a rush to get sorted when I first arrived here and it was the only one in the store that could do all what I needed....
Anyway, it has been without fault and works superbly....
I think the maximum downstream data rate is 27/38 Mbps though

Brad, I agree with Erick. I use a Linksys wireless router, which is located in my basement (2 floors down). I have 4 desktops and 2 laptops accessing the router from as far away as 50-60 feet (through 2 floors and several walls). Even works wonderfully out on the deck and in my hammock at the edge of the woods (~75 feet away).
Obviously, this is all a recommend to my friends and co-workers. No, I am not affilated with Linksys. |

That's the only thing I am worried about is the cordless phones/microwaves. It sounds like linksys is the way to go. |

That's my problem as well. I'm looking to get a 900MGZ or 5.8GHZ. I get PO'd.
I'm using a 2Wire Homeportal - don't recommend. Although it works fine the range on it is lousy. Upstairs, directly above it, will yied an 80% drop in speed. |

Thinking of going for a DECT cordless Phone myself, they run around 1880-1900Mhz I think ... hmmm thats awfully close to GSM maybe 5.8Ghz would be a better option. |
