Hi,
My forum is based on 3.4.03 and has 2333 members. Twice now over a period of 6 months, a new member has received the wrong activation email, ie one for another registrant
Below is a copy of an email that I received from the latest registrant:
quote: I registered with j_s as my username but on completing my registration by clicking on the link in the email below it said
"Hi dmills75, you have already successfully registered with us"
I assume something went wrong here?
I can't login with my details, could you help me with this please.
Regards ***************

Happy Posting!
The registration code is modified to allow users to hand type their code into a text box should they already have activated the link rather than be told that the code cannot be found (a mod from here) but this shouldn't have any impact on the randomizing of the code as it does not affect it. The only suggestion that I can come up with is that because the code is reduced to 16 characters, it somehow came up with the same selection twice but on two seperate occasions.
The odds on that are immense statistically so how can it happen?
(Incidently, dmills75 registered on 12th September 2003)
Thanks,
|

Thanks for the forum swap ruirib but the error is not related to the MOD |

Precisely. As this has never happened with a non-changed Snitz forum, I would say that the cause must be that one.
One question: did you verify whether the generated key for the users were, indeed, identical? I'm presuming that you keep the keys even after users validate the emails... |

Yes, it is related to the mod because it doesn't happen in the base code.
That was the reason we set the code to 32 characters. We had the same problem here at the Snitz Forums when we set it to 16 characters. 2 users actually got the same activation link. So we increased it to 32 characters.
So my guess is it would most likely be because you have it set to 16 characters. |

Yes ruirib, I checked them this time and also the last itme it happened. It's only occured the twice that I know of and I can only assume that other registrants haven't had a similar problem. I'll up the character count to a higher number and hopefully it won't happen again
What do you think my chances of buying a winning lottery ticket this weekend is now lol
Thanks, |

Also, it should only be looking in the MEMBERS_PENDING table for that key. If the user dmills75 is already activated, they shouldn't exist in the MEMBERS_PENDING table any longer. Must be something that MOD you are using is doing or not doing. |

Richard "stole" my question . In a base Snitz forum once you validate the email, the record is deleted from MEMBERS_PENDING. If you did the same, the odds of that happening, even with a smaller key, would be smaller. |

My humble appologies ruirib, I've just checked the register.asp file and it is quite different to the original one <<lowers head down>>
If you'd like to take a look there's a text version HERE
<edit> many thanks ruirib and thanks also to Richard and Davio </edit>
