I thought about hosting my forum myself on a 512/512 kbs up/down line and having a server just for this.
What are the pros and cons for doing this? I realize that all support is up to me, but I would think the forum would be faster and obviously give me total freedom regarding space and databases.
Some questions:
1. Can I have multiple domains on my own server? 2. Is a Pentium 3 800MHZ and 512MB RAM enough? (active user max is about 20) |

512/512 kbs may become fairly limiting after a while, you should also check the terms of your ISP, you may not be allowed to host a website on your connection.
1) yes, but depends on the OS and a few other things. 2) I would plumb for a bit more ram if you can afford it. |

A nice to have also is a Static IP address too, though it's not required it does simplify things a little. |

I have been hosting my own sites for more than 3 years now and I currently host 14 domains on my 512/128 connection. My ISP was great and gave me 8 IP's and knows that I have sites running on them. I only use 4 of the IP addresses for my sites (3 on my Windows 2000 server & 1 on my firewall, mail and DNS server) and they work great with host headers. There are a lot of con's and some pro's to hosting your self.
Pro's ------- The ability to change stuff easly when you want in DNS (create subdomains and so) You control your mail and it is already here when you go to read it It doesn't cost me anymore to host the 14 sites as it would to host 1 You can load any app you like on your server which includes DLL's
Con's ---------- Connection is slow Less stable hosting the sites yourself You open your servers up to attack You need more than 1 server to act as firewall to try and prevent attacks You do not have total control over your site
Personally if I started again, I would get the sites hosted by a hosting company as I host the sites my self I spend all day at work on computers and then I come home and play with the sites because they are there, and the wife gets upset (but doesn't say nothing, just goes and watches TV) and I feel bad. The children hardly know me anymore, but I know it will all be worth it in the long run.
My advice, keep your site with a hosting company and if you have to pay for it, try http://www.kiwihosting.net.nz/ as I hear they are good (little plug). I hope that helps WII. |

Thanks, I hear you !
I wouldn´t like to be online all the time, because I need to take of the hosting, so I think I will stick to hosting companies, and yes, I am using kiwihosting for some of my sites, very good. |
